Bangkok is world famous for its Go Go Bars and there are three main Go Go Bar areas in Bangkok:

Patpong, Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza, all of which offer a similar experience although Patpong is reknowned for its shows which consist of girls using certain parts of their body to shoot darts, bananas or ping pong balls.

A number of years ago, things were pretty different to how they are now. Bars were open longer, the activities in the bars wilder and things were somewhat seedier.

Each person has their favourite location for Go Go Bars in Bangkok and only you can make the decision about which you prefer but most expats who go to these type of bars prefer Soi Cowboy or Nana Plaza. Patpong is more the reserve of tourists.

Soi Cowboy

We'll start with Soi Cowboy as it's probably the best of the three go go bar areas in Bangkok.

Soi Cowboy is located at Sukhumvit 21 at the main Asoke intersection. There is a Skytrain station and a Subway station at that intersection so it is easy to get to. All taxi drivers know how to get there.
Sukhumvit road can get very busy and so if travelling by taxi, you could end up sitting in the traffic for quite a while but this is generally around the hours of 4.30 to 8.30 pm. During the rainy season, traffic can be terrible.

Soi Cowboy is a straight street, free from cars and traffic during the night and lined on either side by bars and go go bars, all brightly lit with neon signs.

All the bars are on a single level meaning you do not need to climb any stairs to get to the main bar although some bars have upstairs areas which you access via stairs inside.

Outside each bar, and along the street as a whole, girls sit around calling you to come inside. Calls of "hey you..han'some man" echo around and the girls can even grab your arm and try to pull you inside but a polite "no thank you" is enough to make them let go.

Nana Plaza

Nana Plaza is set just off Sukhumvit Road at Soi 4 and is close to J W Marriott Hotel, Ambassador Hotel and The Landmark Hotel.

There is a Skytrain station just around the corner and so it is easy to get to. All taxi drivers know how to get to Nana Plaza so if the Skytrain doesn't do it for you, then a taxi will not be a problem.
If you you want to jump between Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza, the skytrain is your best bet up until 12 at night,

Nana Plaza is a well established Go Go bar area of Bangkok and is set in a quadrangle of 3 stories with each story having about 5 bars - some smaller and more popular than others.

The entrance to Nana is crawling with ladies of the night, taxis, food vendors and all sorts of other people milling around.

The open air, non-go go bars which occupy the entrance make a great place for a beer and people watching.

Some say that Nana Plaza has the best bars and the best looking girls but this always fluctuates between Soi Cowboy and Nana. Nana Plaza seems a bit rougher than Soi Cowboy but thus is down to the compactness of the place rather than any real reason.

Sometimes the bars in Nana Plaza have raunchy shows but these are getting less and less.

Patpong

Patpong, the most famous of the go go bar areas in Bangkok, is located on Silom Road and joins up with Suriwongse Road meaning it's possible to get to Suriwongse road from Silom road by walking down Patpong road>

Patpong is also a market and so if you want to visit the Go Go bar area and nosey around, go to the market and peek your head round the doors of the bars although most of the time, you can see straight into the bars and see the girls shuffling on stage to the music.

Patpong used to be much seedier than it is now. There used to be live sex shows and pretty much anything went. Nowadays, it's still possible to see Ping Pong and dart shows but it's not very sexy and not very entertining but at least you can still say that you've been there and done that.

There are a few dodgy bars in Patpong, so avoid going upstairs unless you know the bars to go to otherwise you can end up payng a lot more than expected.
